About Rend Lake Wildlife Refuge

Rend Lake Wildlife Refuge is a 7,700-acre protected area located adjacent to Rend Lake in Jefferson County, Illinois. The refuge encompasses a mosaic of wetlands, forests, grasslands, and croplands, creating diverse habitats for a wide array of wildlife. Established primarily to protect migratory bird populations, the refuge is one of the premier birding destinations in the Midwest, especially known for waterfowl such as Canada geese, tundra swans, and numerous duck species. The extensive marshes and shallow water bodies attract hundreds of thousands of birds annually, particularly during fall and spring migrations. The refuge’s geography includes floodplain forests dominated by oak, hickory, and sycamore, along with bottomland hardwoods, providing habitat for deer, turkey, and small mammals. The adjacent Rend Lake was constructed as a flood control and water supply reservoir, creating the ideal mix of aquatic and terrestrial environments. Recreation at Rend Lake Wildlife Refuge focuses largely on wildlife observation, photography, and hiking. Several trails and observation platforms are available to visitors seeking quiet, immersive nature experiences. Hunting is also permitted in designated seasons, managed to balance recreation with habitat conservation. The refuge is part of a larger network of protected lands along Rend Lake, contributing to the region’s ecological resiliency and outdoor appeal. Visitors appreciate the peacefulness of the refuge, its accessibility from nearby towns, and the chance to witness spectacular bird migrations and local wildlife in their natural settings.
